Taco Via Taco Dogs
A fun twist on a Coney dog. Taco dogs are a fast and family-friendly recipe. As a kid, Saturdays were shopping days. We’d stop and have lunch at Taco Via in Lee’s Summit, MO. This was always what I ordered. That was about 40 years ago, because I don’t live close to one now. I hope I did them justice.
If you want pans that heat evenly and clean easily, this is the newer Ninja set I recommend.

Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 packet taco seasoning
- 1 package hot dogs
- 1 package hot dog buns
- 4 oz cheddar or taco blend cheese (shredded)
- Hot sauce or taco sauce
Directions
- Cook the taco meat according to the package directions.
- Steam the hot dogs for 10 minutes.
- Top with taco meat, cheese, and taco sauce.
- Steam for 30 seconds to melt the cheese, or microwave for 30 seconds.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- Make the meat ahead: Cook the seasoned taco meat earlier in the day and reheat at serving time to keep things fast.
- Swap the dogs: Turkey or beef hot dogs both work—use whatever your family likes best.
- Melt however you like: A quick 30-second steam or microwave melts the cheese over the toppings.
- Topping bar: Set out extra cheese and taco or hot sauce so everyone can build their own.
- Storage: Keep leftover taco meat in the fridge up to 4 days and assemble fresh dogs as you go.
Why This Works
- Steaming the dogs: Gentle steam plumps the hot dogs and heats them through without drying or splitting the skins.
- Taco-seasoned meat: Cooking the beef with taco seasoning packs a familiar, crave-worthy flavor into every bite.
- Residual heat melts the cheese: A brief steam or microwave is all it takes to melt the cheese over the warm meat and dog.
- Bun as the vessel: The soft hot dog bun cradles the meat and toppings so this Coney-style twist stays easy to eat.
